WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army hockey senior captain Chase Podsiad was honored late Friday night when he was announced as the national winner of the Derek Hines Unsung Hero Award.
The winner of the award, which recognizes a fearless leader and beloved fan favorite who always places his team first, was revealed during the off day of the Frozen Four in Denver, Colo.
The Hockey Commissioners Association coordinates the honor. Each of the six hockey conferences nominates a player to a national ballot. From there, sports information directors from each conference vote on a winner, “who displays exemplary sportsmanship, is supremely competitive, intelligent and extraordinarily conditioned with an unmatched work ethic. The contributions of this individual, on and off the ice, cannot be measured by statistics alone.”
The award is named in honor of Derek Hines, a 2003 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, who was a four-year letter-winner for the Army hockey team and displayed each one of the above mentioned characteristics. He made the ultimate off-ice contribution when he was killed in action on Sept. 1, 2005 in Afghanistan.
Chase played for the Jr. Blues during the 2003-2004 season. Congratulations Chase!
