Jr. Blues Fall to the Black Bears

The Springfield Jr. Blues opened up the 2018-19 campaign against the expansion Maryland Black Bears last night in a losing effort 4-3.

The Jr. Blues started off hot in the first period with two goals within 12 seconds to take an early 2-0 lead. Ben Schmidling (St. Joseph, MO) scored on the power play with 3:31 left in the first period. Assisting on the goal were David Schmidling (St. Joseph, MO) and Ryan Reid (Phoenix, AZ). Just moments later, Giovanni Carabelli (Shelby Township, MI) scored an even strength goal to increase the lead to two. The goal was assisted by Cade Groton (Ashburn, VA) and Braden Stewart (East Peoria, IL).

But the Black Bears weren’t down for the count, and stormed back in the second period with three goals in eight minutes to take a 3-2 lead. Maryland had goals from Connor Pooley (2) and Luc Salem. The Jr. Blues would answer with an unassisted tally after the halfway mark of the second frame from defensemen Ryan Reid to tie the game up 3-3. Late in the period, however,  Maryland forward Luke Posner beat rookie Jr. Blues goalie Jack Williams (St. Louis, MO) to take the lead back heading into the third.

The third period was scoreless despite six shots on goal by the Jr. Blues and the game ended 4-3 in favor of Maryland. Both teams finished the evening going 1-4 on the power play. Maryland had 20 shots on goal, and the Jr. Blues had 18. The victory was the first NAHL victory for the Black Bears organization, and raised their record to 1-1-1. The loss starts the Jr. Blues off in the loss column as their record is 0-1-0.

Game Recap – Springfield WINS!

Your Springfield Jr. Blues came away with a shootout WIN tonight against the Minnesota Magicians. They will be back in action tomorrow night at 6:05 pm for the last home game of the regular season! Be sure and come out and support the team in this final home stand before the playoffs.


The first period began with a tally from Minnesota at 11:50. Springfield couldn’t find the back of the net this period, so we ended with a score of 0-1.


The second period started with Nick Schultze tying things up for your Springfield Jr. Blues at 8:29 of the period, with an assist from Rauh. We ended the period tied 1-1.


The third period was slow, with some tensions rising on the ice leading to some double penalties. We stayed 1-1 through the period, ending in an overtime and finally heading to a shootout.


Springfield shootout goal was from Nikita Kozyrev. Evan Fear made 33 saves tonight for a SVV of 0.969%.

Game Recap – Springfield vs. Magicians

Your Springfield Jr. Blues came away with a loss against the Minnesota Magicians tonight. They will face the magic two more times this weekend; Friday night at 7:05 PM and Saturday night at 6:05 PM.


The first period was a quiet one, with nothing but penalties exchanged between the teams. Ovecka got the start in net and stopped the 7 shots he faced in the first period. Springfield ended the period leading in SOG 16-7.


Springfield started off the scoring in the second period with an unassisted goal from Patrick Smyth at 5:48 of the period! Minnesota responded with a goal of their own at 9:14. Fabio Hollenstein tallied on the power play at 11:25, with an assist from Kozyrev, giving Springfield the lead once again. We finished the period 2-1.


The third period started off with Minnesota tying things up at 14:15 of the period, which sent us into overtime. Your Springfield Jr. Blues fell in overtime to the Minnesota Magicians with a score of 3-2.

Game Recap – Springfield Wins 2-1 on Mardi Gras Night

Your Springfield Jr. Blues came away with a win tonight against the Coulee Region Chill. We’ll be back at Nelson Center tomorrow night facing Coulee once again. Doors open at 5:05 for a puck drop at 6:05. We hope to see you there for our Valentine’s Day Date Night game!


The Springfield Jr. Blues started the scoring with a goal at 9:14 by Dylan Rauh, with an assist by Carabelli and Shultze. A few penalties were exchanged, and we ended the period with a score of 1-0.


The second period was mostly spent with at least one team shorthanded, with a total of 5 penalties in the period. The period ended with Springfield still ahead 1-0.


The third period with Fabio Hollenstein finding the back of the net at 6:35 with assists from Walter and Mickelson, making the score 2-0. Coulee found the net at 9:10, making the score 2-1


Evan Fear stopped 43 of the 44 shots he faced tonight, making some timely saves to keep the final score 2-1.


Game Recap – Family Night

Your Springfield Jr. Blues came away with a win tonight over the Kenai River Brown Bears. They’ll be back in action this weekend against Coulee Region with special #PushForThePlayoffs Pricing!


Springfield started off the scoring at 3:00 of the first period, when Fabio Hollenstein found the back of the net. His assists were from Muzzillo and Mickelson. Shortly afterward, Kenai tied up the game at 5:34 of the first. Marcus Walter broke that tie at 7:45, with assists from Murray and Kozyrev. Springfield secured their lead with another goal from Spencer DenBeste at 8:34 with assists from Stewart and Sterne. The period ended with a 3-1 lead for your Springfield Jr. Blues.


In a less eventful second period, Nikita Kozyrev gave Springfield some extra padding at 7:39. His assists were from Mickelson and Muzzillo. The period ended at 4-1.


Similarly, the third period was a quiet one, with Kenai tallying once again at 8:31 of the period. Springfield held onto their lead and ended the game with a score of 4-2.


In net, Evan Fear stopped 33 of the 35 shots made against him.

Weekend Preview – Springfield at Jets January 12-13

This weekend the Springfield Jr Blues will be hosted by the Janesville Jets in Janesville, Wisconsin.

Last weekend, the Springfield Jr Blues hosted the Jets and took two losses in two days. This weekend, team owner Dan Ferguson says he’s hoping to turn those numbers around.
